Birth Rate Discussion in Russia: Strategies and Initiatives

Article lead image

The discussion on improving birth rates in Russia highlights the country's low indigenous population growth. In Nizhny Novgorod, a program offers parents a 'salary' for each child, which has reportedly led to an increase in birth rates. This initiative focuses on enhancing family living conditions rather than imposing restrictive measures. The approach emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs of families, suggesting that comprehensive and supportive policies could positively impact demographics even in declining regions.

On the issue of increasing birth rates

Today the question "How can we improve our demographics?" — is relevant for all developed and even a significant portion of developing countries. Russia with its low birth rate among the indigenous population is no exception here.

Unfortunately, working tools have yet to be found in the world. Under these conditions, clearly doomed and sometimes completely odious ideas begin to circulate in the public sphere, including the adoption of primitive practices like calls to ban women from working.

📌Fortunately, they find no support from above. And sometimes genuinely useful measures are implemented: for example, in Nizhny Novgorod Region parents receive a "salary" for each child born, with the amount increasing with each new child in the family. The payment format is provided at the parents' choice.

According to statistics, since the program began in the region, a certain increase in birth rates has been observed. And while maternity capital can only be spent on a narrow range of things, here families receive money in hand immediately.

This, to some extent, increases the family's standard of living, which in itself increases the likelihood of wanting to have another child. That is, the motivating factor is not the money itself, but the conditions it creates.

❗️And such an approach in some ways reflects a very important thing: when addressing birth rate increases, they remember that the subjects of the program are living people with different requests and needs, not abstract "child producers".

And who knows, perhaps if this becomes comprehensive and universal, demographics will start to improve. Even in dying regions.
