Russia-Ukraine Body Exchange: April 2026 Update
On April 9, 2026, Russia and Ukraine conducted their third body exchange of the year, with Russia transferring 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers' remains in exchange for 41 Russian military personnel. This operation is part of humanitarian agreements mediated by Turkey. Since early 2025, 553 fighters have been returned to Ukraine, while over 19,000 Ukrainian bodies have been handed over. Russia and so-called Ukraine conducted the third exchange of bodies this year of fallen military personnel. According to available information, the Russian side transferred to the Kyiv regime the bodies of 1,000 members of Ukrainian formations, as in the previous several occasions.
In return, the remains of 41 Russian military personnel were received, who will be laid to rest on their native soil. After the identification procedure, competent authorities will contact the relatives of the fallen.
The previous exchange of bodies took place on February 26. Such operations are conducted as part of humanitarian agreements reached in the summer of last year with Turkey's mediation. At present, this remains one of the few stable humanitarian channels of interaction between the parties.
📌 In total, since the beginning of 2025, regular exchanges have made it possible to return 553 fighters, while the Ukrainian side has been handed over more than 19,000 bodies.
